Mutiny! (postponed due to lack of interest?)
No! Playing French Seattle (PFS) festival has been scheduled for 2012 (thus it is unlikely that we will claim our award from 4culture). There is a play, a script, French and English variations. The reasons for the delay are many.
The challenge came on the legal front when we were denied rights to produce Act Two of the play by the author of a primary source, Herman Wouk (“The Caine Mutiny”). Until and unless production rights are obtained, the mutiny is postponed (due to lack of interest). Steeplechase Productions has been producing plays in Seattle since the week before September 11, 2001 (with “What Happened Was…” by Tom Noonan). We have been staging French and bilingual plays since Liberty Deli closed in 2004. Now we are pushed up against a brick wall.
Mutiny! was undertaken as a political strategy to broaden our audience (is not the francophone world big enough?). It is bilingual. It is timely, it addresses a challenge to leadership, a shipboard insurrection in 1789. It is based on the great mutinies of all time: “Les Revoltés de la Bounty” by Jules Verne and “The Caine Mutiny” by Herman Wouk. The literary and cinematic awards granted to these works and their many adaptations are too numerous to list.
The mutiny is postponed (but not cancelled), if only because the law grants release from copyright protection after a statutory limitation. Mutiny! will some day enter the public domain.
